>> hey, tony. >> hello. i didn't know because dave ross was saying, if you would just win one off the wall, i didn't know it was a competition. >> let me be clear. he was factually incorrect. he was completely wrong and if we get the fact checkers in here, you will see. >> we'll ask them about that. >> guess what it is time for. ask the -- oops, ask tony and tucker. >> old habits die hard. >> tucker is handling this one. is consumed with other things. you will at mid that right up front. here is another question. a leftover question from mrs. leftwitch's class at benjamin tasker middle school. we did a bunch of these in our lightning round. before a bunch left over so we'll sneak in in every now and
6:50 am
then. here it is. does the temperature affect how hard it rains and we don't have the name of the student who asked this. a seemingly simple question. >> this is a very complicated question. it seem like appear easy answer but it is not. the basic answer is yes and no. >> okay. going back to the debate again. >> the fact checkers will be here checking this hater on. >> we'll do some very basic principle of weather. the warmer the air, the more water that can be held in its air mass. so that is why, in the summertime, it feels very warm, very huge you had outside like it does this morning. we are holing a lot of water with this particular air mass. that is available energy for very heavy rain. you with me? >> i'm with you. >> oat warmer the air, the more water vapor it hold. cold air can't hold a lot of water vapor. the polar regions, i know they
6:51 am
are covered in snow and ice but parts of the polar regions only get about an inch of snow a year. cold air can't hold much water vapor at all. they don't get much in wait of rain and/or snow. still following me? >> is that why sometimes when it snows a lot, we all say it feels warmer though. >> he y a -- yes, a whole different question. we have those two principles in place. just because the air is warm or hot though, it does not mean that we've got a lot of moisture. we see that the deserts of the u.s. in the southwest. it is 110 in phoenix but it never rains. so you need a combination. here is what you really want for very heavy rainfall. you want a air mass in place or ingredients for a large temperature gradient. on one side of the front, you might want temperature in the 80s or 90s with a lot of moisture available and on the
6:52 am
other side of the front, much cooler air because that cooler air can't hold the water moisture and it squeezes it out and that is why you get very heavy rain. does that make sense at all? >> it does. >> i'll give you another example of when this hold true. in the summertime, we have a lot of moisture around. it is very humid. the air gets lifted well up into the atmosphere and, as the air rises, it cools with height. that cooler air, 30 how feet up, can't holed moisture so then you have a large temperature gradient. -- can't hold the moisture so then you have a large temperature gradient. you need them working together and you need a source of moisture. that is very important too. just because it is hot, you don't necessarily have the source of moisture. we have get the southerly wind in the summertime and we get water vapor off the gulf of mexico or atlantic ocean. >> did you just fall asleep over there. >> i'm listening. it is very interesting and very

scientific. i just want to point out before hand that this is tucker's idea of fun. remember, he said we have a fun weather guy question. >> he did say that. >> thank you, tony. >> that was a lot of fun. but it was good. >> this is what tucker does in his spare time. >> tony, remind me. how much did you help me this morning. >> i set myself up for that. if you have a question you want answered, go to myfoxdc.com and click on the weather tab. as you were doing the research, i saw you were having so much fun -- >> you didn't want to break it up. >> you are such a geek. i love it. >> let's check in with julie wright and get the latest on traffic. >> oh! >> what? >> she was yawning. >> i just want to say i don't do that when dave ross is on
6:54 am
the set. i'm just letting you go. >> oh! >> you guys -- the guys are above the accident at liberia. accident activity still in place. stay single file to the left to get by. follow me inside if you will. we have delays 450 at the bw parkway due to accident activity. inbound 50 below speed leaving 410 headed in towards riverdale and cheverly. northbound baltimore-washington parkway checking for accident activity here at greenbelt road. that's a check of your fox 5 on-timetraffic. on-timetraffic. >> thank you. still ahead on fox 5 morning news, it is one of the best times for family fun. >> holly is live in durwood, maryland as they have the 22nd annual harvest festival. she will show us how it promises to give visitors a taste of the farm life. a little bit of fog mixed in there as well. we'll be right back.
